One of the most frustrating things to me about having a Mac is the very limited choices and poor functionality of web-type cameras. (And I AM an avid Mac fan, owning 1 at home and 6 at work).
Can anyone provide advice about the best hardware/software choices? Any word on the Ariston USB I-See or I-See Pro? Quickcam?
Thanks!!

i use alphacam (http://www.alphakanal.de/alphakanal/pub/) to stream a live view of avenue a and third street in the east village, nyc.
it's a webstar plugin that does both streaming progessive jpeg and streaming via a java applet. I have a very simple javascript that detects the browser type and server the correct format. It's quite full featured and includes a shockwave chat and the abilty to view the desktop (i don't use either).
my setup is quite simple: xcam anywhere from x10.com connected to a 8500/g3 upgraded machine.
veiw the results at: http://www.studio2f.com

I bought Zoom Cam USB with SiteCam 4.0 and CU-seeme 3.1.2. The SiteCam 4.0 software has good WebCam functions built in, but it regularly crashes my iMac 333. The CU-seeme installer software wiped out the hard drive on my iBook, requiring a reformat. CU-seeme won't run on my iMac 333 because the bundled software says it does not support HFSplus hard drive format. The video quality of the Zoom Cam is not very good, but what can you expect for only $100.

Hey if anyone is looking for a good web cam, look no further than the 3Com HomeConnect camera. It is, quite simply, the best camera on the market. Most of the other under-$200 cameras on the market are, quite simply, crap. (IRez, Kensington, etc.)
While the 3Com site might have you believe it is a PC-only camera, Mac drivers exist and can be downloaded at http://www.vistaimaging.com
Go to that site and compare the difference between the 3Com camera and others and you will see for yourself. The 3Com has better resolution (real resolution, not interpolated), better color, and is faster than any other camera on the market under $200.

To the beige guy:
Thanks for the tip. Have you personally used the 3COM camera on your Mac? If so, it would be great to know which applications you used it with and for.
Thanks,
MJS
