Iomega Buz Problems

Has anyone had any success using a Iomega Buz to digitize video on a G4? When I first got it, everytime I would try to capture video in primere, the machine would lock up. After talking to Iomega it turns out that I needed a new card, the older ones won't work with G4. After receiving and installing the new card I have the same problem. Iomega now tells me that I also need a new software cd. Am I wasting my time trying to get the Buz system to work? I would also like to hear about other options for video capture for G4. I'm not looking for anything professional level, just something I can digitize old home movies with. (from beta!)

I was told by an Iomega tech support official that the Buz would never be updated for use in the G4's. The product was discontinued, and would not work in anything higher than a Blue and White G3.
Your only other low cost alternative is XLR8's USB Video capture device. You probably won't get full frame, full motion video, but it's the least expensive option.
The next option would be the Aurora card for about $500. Keep in mind, to do full size, full motion video, you'll need an UltraWide SCSI hard drive & controller too. Another $500.
Your best bet:
Get a Firewire digital camera with a analog converter on it. This will give you the best of both worlds and should be under $1000.

I just ordered a G4 and was in a similar quandry... it seems that trying to get the Buz to work is pointless. I believe I've found something that's much better than the not-so-great quality of USB: http://www.ati.com/na/pages/products...128/index.html
it's an internal PCI card from ATI that has a TV tuner and video capture built-in. It costs <$200. I'm ordering one when my new G4 comes from apple!
hope this helps.

Apple PCI cards require a little more information on the chip than PC's do. The Buz card will work on a G4, but you have to have someone burn you a new chip to replace the 1cm x 1cm removable on the board.
With a little bit more information on the card, the G4 can recognize it and it does work. I still want a digital camera and iMovie, though.

Pinnacle's MiroMotion cards are pretty good in G3s and should work in G4's. I've got the DC30 running in a beige G3, about to move it to the B/W. Their drivers seem to be kept current too.

I have (on my G4) an ixMicro TV Tuner/FM card (~$50) which also has VGA and SVideo In capabilities. I believe that you can simply open the TV software (included), play your movie on your external analog device, and have the TV SW "record" a digital movie (like a TV+digital VCR). The recording works very well. It is fully Quick Timed-ed, and so you can directly save in a half-million video formats from the TV SW.
Two problem: a) the software is not compliant w/ HFS+ and >2 GB file sizes. b) the card is not EnergyStar compliant, so it cannot sleep.
