I have an unused 15" monitor in the office and would like to use it as a second monitor on my mac (Powermac 8600). But after looking in the various mac stores, I only seem to be able to find high end accelerated/3D/etc cards.
What I'd like is just your basic, run of the mill, video card that can give me 832x624 on a 15" in thousands of colours max.

Are there any cheap PCI cards avilable I could use? Or can I use a basic PC/Wintel card on my mac, do drivers exist for these?

If all else fails I'll buy a high-end one, and switch my current monitor to it, using the built-in video for the 15", but I don't really need all this power.

Thanks.
Colin

Is a 3dfx's Voodoo 3 2000 PCI video sound cheap for you? It is much cheaper than most Mac video cards I think. It will work on your Mac, so you may consider that.

If you are interested in the Voodoo 3, see this post http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum4/HTML/000638.html for a bit more information.

Video cards made for PCs, other than the Voodoo 3 cards, will not work on the Macs. Read this post http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Foru...ML/000333.html for a bit more discussions.

Thanks for the tips. I guess I'll seek out a 3dfx. I just noticed a few going for cheap second hand on a classifieds board.

Cheers

If you want a basic PCI card to run a second moniter, get an IXmicro Ultimate Rez or Pro Rez card. You can find them for ~50 at a bunch of online used Mac shops (usually they're just OEM versions that don't come with useless stuff like books and CD's)

Yes like he said, Ixmicro URez. But keep an eye out for fax software conflicts.

IXMICRO went out of business.

Good riddance. The company made bad hardware, terrible drivers, and lousy support.

It would be better to buy from any other manufacturer (ATI, 3dfx, Formac, etc.).

Adam Thanks for the tip, I’ve not had any reason to need their support, so I had no idea they were gone. I’ve had one now for over a year, and it works without a hitch.
