I am a recent switcher buying a Macbook Pro shortly to replace, well work alongside, my Windows XP computer. I currently have a old 15 inch monitor on my XP machine that I'll be replacing. I want to replace this with a new monitor and most of all since I'll use it with both my XP and my MacBook Pro I want one that has dual dvi or a dvi and vga input.
What is new to me though is it seems for Macs all the monitors Apple sells are Widescreen. This isn't something I saw with PC's but how important is it? I have looked at 3rd party monitors and see some that are widescreen, some that aren't. I have no problem with going with widescreen even if it costs more considering it is something that there's an advantage to.
The question, should I go with a Apple monitor or is there a 3rd party monitor that stands out as a good monitor and most of all that is cheaper? Seems a lot of the others are cheaper than Apple.

I would recommend the Dell E207WFP. It has both DVI and VGA inputs so you could connect the Mac to the DVI and the PC to the VGA. It lists for $289 but you can get a 20% off coupon on Ebay for 99 cents. Brings the price down to about $230 and shipping is free! I'm a big fan of the Dell monitors. I have the 24" widescreen, 20" widescreen, and 19".

I personally recommend Gateways 21" widescreen. It is a very good monitor and i am pleased with it. There is no whine, no ghosting, and no image burn in. It also has P.I.P, allowing you to watch tv, play video games, or view a second pc among one of its many inputs while monitoring your downloads via another etc etc.

Highly recommend the Viewsonic 22" LCD VX2235 . I got it for 300GBP which is a bargin considering an apple 23" is 700GBP. It also has VGA and DVI inputs so you can switch as and when you want! There is a pic on the macbook setup thread near the end so u can have a look at it!

Widescreens are gorgeous and the way to go.
Apple's line is very good. Dell has a phenomenal price on their 30" right now, $1250 !!! However I don't think it has a VGA input. However, chances are you won't be booting XP much now you have a MacBook Pro, and the 30" works great with the MBP.
Try a 30" in an Apple Store and drool. Can you tell I want one bad?
