How do you get a Mac to recognize a Zip as the start-up. I am working on a Preforma 636CD with System 7.6 and have the entire system on a 250MB Zip to use as an emergengy start-up disk. I have selected the Zip as the start-up in the control panel but when I restart, it opens from the hard drive. I know that to start from a CD you hold down "C". Is there a trick to do this to a Zip? I tried at the Iomega and Apple websites and couldn't find the answer. Any of you wise Mac users have the answer? Thanks!

Don't quote me on this, but since the ZIP drive is hooked up to the computer's SCSI interface, you may be able to do that by pressing the keys 'Command-Option-Shift-Delete' on startup, which is supposed to force the computer to ignore the default startup disk and scan the SCSI connections to find an alternative startup disk. I've never tried, though...

are you sure that you held on to the key-combo long enough. It should spool through, realise that there isn't a system folder present and start to look for one from an external device. If you have the right system for your Performa, it should work.

Another method would be to use the 7.6 disk tools floopy - i think that you can get this from apple...

good luck,

I held it until the happy mac came up. I understand that means the system was found. Thanks for replying - I'm hoping someone can come up with a solution rather than use a floppy.

I would first make a startup floppy (in case my idea goes to hell), then put your internal system folder on your desktop. Then make sure that the system folder on the zip disk is "blessed" with the Mac on the folder.

Upon restart if it doesn't startup from the ZIP, it won't startup. In that case, start up from your startup disk (or disk tools) and put the system folder back. Your quest is over. Otherwise, glad I could help.

One word of caution, these drives aren't made for that level of activity. I used a syquest EZ135 (remember those?) a few years back when my internal HD died. It lasted about a year or so. It ruined the drive.

You can set your Zip disk to the startup disk in the startup disk control panel. This will make the computer display a blinking ? for a second or two if your Zip isn't in, but it will boot up off of the Zip by default if the Zip is in the drive.

Tried that! It immediately starts from the hard drive - no Mac with a ?.

GORDYmac - I will try your suggestion when I have a little more time to work on it.

Thanks again - to both of you for your help.
