there was a old thread on the same problem, and i didn't take it seriously until now.
few days ago i noticed my intellimouse explorer "delaying" and "pausing" for just moving around. it happens right after startup, in the finder, no other apps opened, but just moving around the pointer... it doesn't seem to happen in ie5, but happens frequently in the finder.
the red light doesn't disappear and the only devices connected are the iShock, and the Intellimouse explorer. i don't think i Shock's sucking up anything at all... i hope it's a software problem, so I could rely on future updates.
But while it stalls/pauses, the hard disk clatters... please don't tell me it's the hardware itself...
as this problem irritates me, i stare at the MICROSOFT trademark on the butt of my mouse...

Just to ease your pain a little - you are not alone - I experienced the very same thing. Happened to me pretty suddenly after weeks of good work, the intellimouse had this - I take a break - behaviour. It semmed to go away at first after usb unplug replug, but at some point my G3 just froze. Minor possibility would be the recent installation of IE5.0. Reinstallation of the Intellimouse software didn^t solve the problem. For now my solutions was to use the original mac-mouse....

HA!HA!HA! I laugh at your Intellimouse's problem! (just joking!) Anyway, about your problem. Make sure you DON"T have the microsofted version of intellimouse driver on your computer. Instead opt for the original USB Overdrive 1.3 ( I think?) Also another chore that would help is to unplug and replug the USB mouse, because the driver , regardless of version is still pretty much beta, (buggy) etc. My own explorer mouse hasn't had any problems beyond odd quirks when scrolling in the finder, right after I plug it in. Also gaming sensitivity is not high enough in my opinion, so I use the recently debuted RAZOR mouse with like 2400 dpi sensitivity. It should be fine for most regular players however.

I am using an intellimouse explorer on an 8600/250 with a PCI based USB card. The only problem I have had with it is that when I use a game that uses game sprockets to configure game controllers, the intellimouse does not work at all in the game sprockets configure screen. I have to use a ADB mouse to configure game controllers. I have seen this behavior in Madden 2000 and two Ambrosia games.
any thoughts?

The problem is likely the same as it has been on the PC.
MS used cheapy switches in the buttons.. and sometimes they tend to have a mind of their own..
Take the mouse back to where you bought it... arm yourself with print outs from www.dejanews.com on the topic on the PC and demand an exchange.

1. Hi, while I have not noticed any cursor pauses with my Intellimouse Explorer on my G4 350 Rev B, I have noticed that if I haven'e used the scroll wheel for a while, the scroll wheel won't respond immediately. Once I've got it going though, it does respond correctly. BTW, I'm using USB Overdrive 1.2.
2. IE 5 sucks, I'm sticking with 4.5.
3. The Explorer version kicks serious ass. People say they won't get one because they're expensive, but I got mine for $53 at ecost.com, I think. Wherever I bought it from, I found the price on shopper.com. Anyway, the red light in the back is serious coolness, and it has a nice paint job. The only problem I have with it is something I've heard someone mention before: the four pads on the bottom of the mouse sometimes stick, just slightly, to the surface of the desk. This can sometime make precise movements difficult.
Well, enough shameless (and unpaid! plugs for tonight...

scroll problems? i agree with Scott Anguish, MS seems to use cheap parts for their products. i mean bill's ideology is to get more profit... really, reviews for MS products should be for "long-term use" instead of "this looks-good, and is stable for the time we had it"...
are owners of the ms explorer going to be stuck with this mess? are there any cure?

have you changed your surface recently? I switched desks from a smooth light wood grain finish to a rougher heavy wood grain finish and things started going wacky.
The sensor is very particular about surface patterns.
Does anyone know what the best surface for this type of mouse is??

Try to stay away from glossy or slightly shiny laminated, or varnished surfaces, this will cause wacky reflection problems. Also something with a complex pattern (wood) will make the tracking off. I've found that sticking with the old mouse pad (while pedestrian) is still the best bet, it works great, it's accurate, more comfortable, and the best part is that non of that crap gets stuck to my puck.

my intellimouse seemes to have a loose connection where the cord goes into the mouse. i have yet to send it in for warenty but it'll be moving it around and it will pause. sometimes my computer grinds like it has to reload the drivers. if software doesn't help you - you might want to check that out.

I've found that an Allsop mouse pad, one of those fabric ones with the water drops printed on it, works pretty well as a tracking surface for an Intellimouse Explorer. Better than the plain gray pad I had been using, anyway, and the rubber backing is "stickier" so it doesn't slide around as much on the desk. Best of all, the pad's available in several colors to match your Mac.

I notice the same thing with my Intellimouse, then I noticed that a very small bit of paper had gotten into the area of the optical sensor (I had recently cut some paper on my desk). I used a small paintbrush to brush the sensor area and now all is well. I guess you have to clean them sometimes (I've had it since Oct. and this was the first cleaning)) but it still blows away any mouse with a ball in it. Make sure the sensor area is TOTALLY clear of any obstructions. And yes, it does work better with a mouse pad.

if you have a cache utility, and/or if you have keychain control strip module, this is normal. mine has been like this for months, just a brief, 1-2 sec delay. that simple.

Dr sam, agent cocoa, and stickey seem to be having the same problem with their intellimouse as mine.
I have to say though after using this mouse for 2 weeks since this problem started, the disease has been getting worse. The red light under the mouse is more frequently dimming out or flashing. When the cursor pauses on my monitor the light dims or turns off, but worse it is unpowered for minutes now, meaning the cursor pauses for MINUTES!!!
I think this was in the previous thread about the problems with Intellimouse, but it seems the problem is a USB and Intellimouse problem. Now, I don’t know if it’s Apple’s USB extensions, or MS’s intellimouse driver, but why the heck is the power not going into my intellimouse??? Not premanently, but on and off…
Other users having similar problems with their intellimouse explorer, what kind of configuration do you have for your USB periferals? Because I just have my mouse and iShock connected into my o.g. keyboard USB hub. Has anyone tried using the Intellimouse connected to a powered USB hub, ofcourse those people having this problem???
The funniest thing, I tried writing this post SEVEN times. Seriously SEVEN times. Everytime I’m typing in my little reply box, my IE 5 crashes "Type 2: unexpecteedly". I don’t even have any other apps running… The last one gave me a compete freeze, so after a startup, as of now, I’m writing a draft in MS Word. Well I’m saving every on every other word I type. Wondering why Word isn’t crashing…
I just want to post this message on, please Bill just this little favor… trust me no ones going to have any different opinion about your company. Only the same… I swear the products from MS is really killing me…

Yo! My Intellimouse Optical is okay, but it is NOT perfect. I like the
five buttons, although it is a little TOO light, because I almost knocked
it off my desk about 5 times already. The PROBLEM is that it's really jumpy
at high mouse speed, and likes to stick in WINDOWS w/ no apps on. I tried
SHUTTING OFF ACCLERATION, and the auto-snap magnet, ect., but it still
SUCKS at high setting. I am using: Thursday June 22, 2000 patch.from
Microsoft (4 Megs). Is there a Newer patch? Gracias-Jmosh69@excite.com
