Hi

Does initializing the HD "damage" or "stress" the HD in any way or is this a "sure, no problem" action?

No problemo

Just deletes the directory, redraws the sectors, etc.

If you decide to zero the HD, or do a low level format, then it does a bit more action.

But none of thats anything to worry about.
