I'm interested in buying a photoprinter. However, I don't know that much about them yet. I would like some input on what you think is a) the top of the line photo printer ... cost is not an issue b) the best photo printer you can buy for under $900 c) which company epson, sony etc seems to be taking the lead and making the best technology for photoprinters and d)the reason I should ever go to ritz to get 3 4 x 6 prints for 10 dollars (i.e. 24 pictures would cost $80.
Thanx,
Mike

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 870 and think it's the best printer I've ever had. I only use Kodak Premium Photo paper with it for the best results. I print mostly from my Kodak DC280 pictures, but also from scans. They look as good if not better than prints from my 35mm Kodak. I can't imagine ever getting film developed again. In terms of print quality, Epson's will all be the same. As you move up the line you get wide format, then netowrking options. Their new Stylus Photo 780 for $129 is really nice, just as good as my year old $250 870 for half the price.

Check out Bruce Fraser's article in Macworld (8/2001). He gives the nod to Epson's Stylus Photo 780. If you're looking to make big prints (larger than 8x10), go with the Epson SP 1280. I've owned the Epson Photo Ex and the 1270. Both are great.
Paper makes a big difference. I like the Epson Premium Semi Gloss (looks like a photograph) and the Archival Matt.

What about the Epson Stylus 2000P. Is this their brand new printer? Does anyone have one yet?

This printer was actually released at LAST year's Macworld Expo. I don't reccomend it. It doesn't have the resolution of the 1280 and the ink drop size is larger, which makes for more of a "digital" look.

What about another brand besides Epson? Does anyone else rival their performance? If so what is their cost/performance ratio in your opinion?

I have an Epson Photo 870, which produces great results! I dabble in nature photography, and I've printed some pics that rival 35mm prints! This printer is no longer available, but the newer 780, 890, and 1280 will produce the same output. There is one catch: as far as I know, none of these Epsons will work natively in OS X, so don't expect to use them there unless you're using Classic. Epson continues to stonewall its installed base with regards to updated drivers for new and relatively new printers, and, unfortunately, these are the best of the bunch for doing photo quality work at a reasonable price! Also, these printers are not very good at plain text work; they are designed primarily for photo work.
