I have an iBook with only 1 firewire and wondered if it would work if I pluged my Camera AND the harddrive I would use for capture into a hub and then into the computer. If it workd, what hub do you recommend?

Thanks

If my understanding of how Firewire works is correct, the answer is yes. The Firewire hub should route data directly between the camera and the drive without even considering your iBook. Note: Should.

As for vendor, Belkin makes 6-port Firewire hubs which are both good and good looking. They match Apple's product aesthetics quite nicely.

I was in the same situation - the short answer is it works fine. I bought a 6 port hub from Firewiredirect.com (about $45 or so). I've got an external HD, my video camera connection, and my cd burner hooked up through it with nary a problem.

You can also daisy chain firewire devices (I don't remember the limit, but it's more than the average person has to worry about). Just make sure that your peripherals have pass through ports (unlike my HD, which prompted the hub purchase) and patch the camera in at the end of the chain.

63 devices per chain. I'm not sure if branching on repeaters/hubs extends that to 63 devices per branch, though.

Thanks all. What I'm looking at now is buying a drive from OWC that I think has a pass through port and connecting that way. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.
