I have 3 Multiscan 420GS 19 inch monitors.

For a year or so, I drove them at 1600x1200@75 with both Mac and PC computers. That res is just a tick too high for these monitors, there's some crawl and wiggle. I now drive them at 1280x960 and they look much better. Obviously useable at 1600x1200 (I did for a year+), but I'm leaving them at 1280 from now on.

So, about new monitors. I see 4 in the range. Prices approximate.

19" Sony G420S ~ $440
21" Sony E500 ~ $570
21" Sony G520 ~$750

The last five years I've used a price point around $600-$650 for new monitors, starting with the 17" Sony 200sx many years ago- still inuse with it's 9500 G3/400.

Anyway, this means I can consider 21" monitors, finally.

Will the E500 drive 1600x1200@75 very well? It's rated at 2048x1536, so presumably 1600 would be well within range.

But the G520 is $200 more. Is there a known qualitative difference of some sort. Would seem so. I'd pay for the G520 if they are decidedly better monitors.

I've got a Sony CPD-E400 (which is the 19" - the E500's little brother.) They both use the same tube (Totally flat FD Trinitron), and are basically the same monitor except for the size. The E400 drives 1600x1200@75 wonderfully, so I'd expect the E500 to perform just as well.. image is crisp and sharp, and there's no discernable flicker or wiggle (as far as I can tell.)
