Hello there!

My old "PC Only" college recently bought a single B&W G3 for the Art department which no one knows how to use :-)

They had a spare HP Colour LaserJet 4500, standard model, no ethernet, just Parrallel which the IT admin decided to connect to the lonely G3.

He called HP and they said the best thing would be to get a HP JetDirect USB card (adds USB to the 4500)

The 4500 is now connected to the G3 using USB. The installation is kind of confusing, the HP manuals say to install the software and use the Chooser (this does not work at all) Apples own instructions say to use the Desktop Printer Utility. Following Apple's instructions creates a HP ColorLaserJet 4500 desktop printer. All seems fine with the printers test page confirming that the connection with the G3 is good.

Unfortunately whenever you try to print from any app all you get is a page with one line of rubbish and an error from the LaserWriter software that the job could not the completed.

The G3 is running 8.6, the IT admin doesn't want to go to 9 yet arrgh!

Has anyone out there used this setup, specifically a HP Colour LaserJet 4500 with a JetDirect USB card.

I know the JetDirect Ethernet card would be a better solution than USB but I'd like to get it working to impress the PC IT people.

Also they are building a new Multimedia Centre and would like to deck it out with new iMacs and a G4 Server, if i can fix this problem easily it would help to convince them that Mac's are the way to go...

Any help would be much appreciated!
