Hi,

I have a QuickSilver 933mhz G4 tower. It came with a SuperDrive, but it died a few months ago, and I replaced it with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D which is working great. I just recently heard about "Dual Layer DVDs" for the first time and am very interested. According to the Apple System Profiler my Pioneer drive can burn the following DVD formats: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. What I am curious about is if I buy some DVD+R DL dics and burn them, can they only be read on certain DVD drives? Or will they be able to be read by any normal DVD read-only drive? Such as the "combo drive" in my iBook G4? If anyone could let me know I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Nearly every movie you rent or buy on DVD is now on a DL disc. So, yes if your burner burns correctly, then the discs will be viewable on any DVD player in the appropriate region.

There are a few quirky DVD drives that won't read a burned dual layer disk (or a +R disk), but the vast majority will work fine.

HD-DVD, Bluray and DVD Player DVD±R/W Compatibility list

DVD Media, HD-DVD and Bluray Disc Media list

I had a couple Pioneer-made DVD burners (106D and 108D) and currently using the SONY DW-Q120A DVD burner. In general, I use Verbatim DVD+R DL media and never gotten for a coaster.
