I've been looking at a lot fo enclosures lately and have finally found one I like. But the things is like almost all of he drives I've looked at they claim to only fit up to a 500gb hard drive.

Why is this? Why can't enclosures that can fit a 500gb drive fit a 750gb drive? If they can fit them why do they say only up to 500gb?

It depends on a lot of things. Are 750GB drives taller than a standard half-height internal drive? Does the support chipset in the enclosure have the ability to address that large a drive? (Yes, the controller does have to be compatible with the drive, and frankly, 750GB drives are not exactly common, so it's quite possible that inexpensive, or even really expensive enclosures don't yet support that size drive because they can't.)

I would have said that they wrote 500gb because that was the largest drive available at the time and that it supports 750gb.

Most of the enclosures were released when 500GB was the largest available or largest on the roadmap... I can't think of a reason why they would support 500GB but not 750GB.

I had not considered the "time to market" angle, but that sounds a lot more likely than my SWAG. I can't think of what might be different between a whopping big drive and an obscenely big one except how much stuff you can put on it.

Just like the Mac Pro used to "max out" at 500GB per drive - it's simply a limitation of what was available when they began marketing.
