....brief background.

I already have broadband access at home, which is first rate, and I have access when at work. What I would like is a "limited" wireless access plan for when I'm on travel to check mail and such without requiring a trip to a hotspot. As I already have a Cingular voice plan, I am aware of their data plans, but at 29 bucks a month, to use my cell phone as a modem, it doesn't make any fiscal sense considering my needs outlined above. So I figured I'd query folks here for any insights/thoughts.......

If I have to live with looking for hotspots when on travel, so be it, (but hey, it never hurts to ask ).

TIA

-A

Cingular sucks, the cost per Mb is outragous.

I have Verizon and a 8703e so I dont need to tether and I dont pay the bill since my firm picks it up. BUT i do pay my kid sister's cell phone and she uses a Motorola on Ampd (which uses Verizon's network) to connect her laptop online when she isnt home. The phone was cheap with only an 18 month contract and I don't pay more than $55 a month and she uses it quite a bit for internet access with both her laptop and the phone itself.

The carrier is targeting this demographic with the lure of internet anywhere so the cost for data is reasonable.
