I'm looking to buy a modem for my B&W G3. Looking at the prices, a Mac USB modem seems to be about twice the price of a PC modem. (At least here in the UK.) Looking at previous posts I understand that a PCI modem is not an option but what about a PC external USB modem?

I've also heard that several makes of modem such as GV, Best Data, Boca are not compatible with MacOS 9.1 & X. (Otherwise I would have bought a B&W internal modem from www.smalldog.com for $25 + shipping). Does anyone know anything more about this?

As far as I know, the problem is only with the USB modems and 9.1 or OS X. You can add a serial port to your G3 with the Gport http://www.griffintechnology.com/serial/gport.html This works with my Global Village 33.6 serial modem and the GlobalFAX 2.6.8 works as well. I also know that my USRobotics 56K external serial modem works with 9.1 with the Gport. Just stay away from the USB modems for now. I cannot get my GV 56K USB modem to work. If only I could get the GlobalFAX software to work with the USRobotics modem....
