well dont have unlimited money but trying to decide if I should go with soundsticks or apple pro speakers with my soon to be ordered quicksilver. the main purpose would be listening to mp3s (22 Gigs so far) while working (headphones give you a headache after awhile). thanks!

I cast my vote for the Boston Acoustics BA635's.
They're at about the level of the SoundSticks, if not better (IMO), and are much cheaper.
Nice system, but not as pretty as the SoundSticks, of course...

Noooo!!! The Pro speakers aren't bad at all! Granted, whenever you leave the covers on they sound somewhat muffled, but as standalone speakers, without a sub, I think they sound really pretty good. A whole lot better than tthe iMacs internal speakers, which many find usable. In fact, I'd be happy to say that they have the same clarity (obviusly not the same power) as my large bookshelf Tannoy speakers!
Having said this though, as Cipher13 rightly pointed out, many third party speakers are in fact significantly better than Apple's offerings.
Just my tuppence worth...

Ya they are good for small speakers but they sound bad compaired to SoundSticks. If you are trying to save money then get them but you will not like them one bit after you hear the SoundSticks.

IMO that depends on your personal preference. I find the Pro speakers on a par with soundsticks in terms of clarity, which is what I would look for in speakers intended to play background music through. Certainly, the soundsticks are significantly more powerful - but if the original poster's main purpose for the speakers is to listen to MP3's whilest working, I hardly think that the extra power of the soundsticks is required... unless of course looks play a large part of his purchase, in which case the soundsticks win hands down.
Mania, providing you're not looking for ultra powerful, heart stopping sounds, go for the Pro speakers, and spend the extra cash on some RAM whilst it's super-cheap.

Jesus Cipher, you are a Boston Acoustics stock holder, aren't you? I don't think I've seen a thread about speakers get more than 3 posts old before you chime in...

I have the SoundSticks and I think they're great! Best computer speakers I've ever owned.

I think the best speakers for the money are the Monsoon iM-700s. Much more, better, cleaner sound. You can get them for $135 at
buy.com.
This MacNN review is typical of most that compare the Monsoons to Soundsticks.
They sound awsome and look great. And why bother getting an additional speaker set w/o at least having the ability of cranking up the volume sometimes (even if you generally don't)? I use mine as b'ground while working and barely ever go above about 5-10% of the total volume (and never over 30%). This fills the room I work in. The worst way to listen to any speakers is anywhere near their maximum output level.

I agree with Cipher13...Boston Acoustics speakers sound amazing. I happen to have the BA790, which are just slightly larger than the BA635's (and they're digital, but the digital jack doesn't fit into the G4 digital audio port). My home theater system speakers are all Boston Acoustics as well. Only drawback to the Boston multimedias is that they're beige and don't look as cool as Apple's speakers.
If you do get the Apple Pro speakers, I recommend getting the iSub as well, that will give you some decent bass.
