I bought a flat panel monitor to use with my 12" PB G4 and have it hooked up via the mini DVI to DVI converter. But I was wondering, since this monitor has suport for both DVI and VGA, what are the pros and cons of using either one. Which one should I be using? Is one better for certain uses, while the other better for others?

Right now I have it set as the extension of the desktop, so I keep having to drag windows form the PB screen to the monitor. It'd be great if I could set it to mirror displays mode and use the full resolution of the monitor, which is 1680 x 1050, but instead what happens under mirror displays mode is the resolution of the monitor is automatically lowered to the max resolution of the PB, which is 1024 x 768. Needless to say, such a low resolution on a 20" screen looks oversized and blurry, like it's for people with deteriorating vision.

Would appreciate some thoughts on the matter.

First off - if you don't want mirroring (and it sounds as if you don't want an extended desktop, either), then there are a couple of options that might appeal.

If you don't mind the extended desktop but it bothers you that your internal display is the default one for new windows and the dock (and so on) then you can go into System Prefs / Displays / Arrange (I think it's called - I'm just running one display now) and drag the menubar over into the second display. This'll default most things to that screen from then on.

Alternatively, if you've got an external mouse and keyboard then you can close your PB and only use the external display. Just plug in the mouse and k/b and press a key to bring up the screen on the external display.

You want DVI, too. Much better image quality. There's nothing that's better with VGA AFAIK.

Hope that helps.
