This HD is a Maxtor 80GB Firewire drive; I believe it's the same model Apple sells under the "Accessories" in the online Apple Store.

My Firewire HD which I use for backups is doing some odd things. Halfway through a transfer its red transfer light turns on completely (i.e., no blinking, meaning SOMETHING is happening continuously) and it makes sounds that I would describe as slowing down, then speeding up again to full speed. It crashes my iMac when it does this, and does not work again unless unplugged and wait for a couple miutes.

I've stopped using this drive for the moment; is there any way o make this drive useful again or should I have some fun taking it apart?d

That sounds mechanical to me. I'd figure it to be a warranty issue, amd return it. hopefully, your internal drive won't crash while it's away.

Before sending it back try to use only the (newest) Apple firewire drivers, throw away the ones Maxtor sends with their disks.
