I got a new 733 G4 at work and it came with the new pro speakers. Which I thought were supposed to sound great. But my set seems to struggle with white noise and has very little bass. I have a Yamaha set on my G4 at home and they blow the pro speakers away. Granted my home set has a woofer but the pro speakers sound horrible even in the high ranges. Specially if you crank them past 40%. Just wondering if I got a bad set . Because frankly they really suck. Anyone else notice this?

Screw the apple pro speakers. Get a good set from altec lansing or monsoons. If your near a stereo hook the g4 to a stereo

While there's always a chance that one of the speakers is blown (do the diaphragms look OK?), the fact is that all small speakers are limited by the laws of physics and a subwoofer makes a huge difference in perception. I would bet that you would perceive the Yamahas much less positively if you removed the sub.

It's also possible that the amplifier circuitry in the 733 is clipping and causing distortion, but again, I would bet that the absence of a sub is the main factor.

You're also probably in a much different listening environment. Room size, surfaces, and placement have as big an effect on speaker sound as the design of the speakers themselves.

I've got soundsticks, I love 'em... They're on my iMac at home
Goood bass, very nice highs

struggling w/ a problem on my G4 though, noise coming through internal speaker, trashed sound prefs, what else? (see post created 4/17/01)

Thanks, your welcome, and please

that's odd because the pros on my 733 sound great... but they didn't at first....

I don't know if this is the case with yours, but make sure the plug is seated FIRMLY on the back of the tower. It pushes in and should contact the back plate fully. I plugged my in originally and it felt like it was in all the way at first, but when I pushed harder it "clicked" into place and the sound difference was very apparent.

Yeah, sounds like the iSub would help. I guess I'm just a little disappointed with the pro speakers. Thanks for all the advice. Wonder if Apple will ever offer the soundsticks as an option over the pro speakers?

The Pro speakers really suck. They are the same ones that shipped with the Cube just with a different connector.
They are impressive for their small size and they look nice but they sounds rather bland.

I got the SoundSticks for my cube and they blow my mind (sound wise) and look sooo right with my Mac.

Three words: Altec Lansing ACS33.

They kick butt, that is all you need to know. <$50.

They suck so much... I'm not sure about keeping them or using my old 5 years old Yamaha speakers (better range)...

I'm only keeping them on my desk because there are good looking. Probably gonna change them for soundsticks.

Well of course, all audio equipment has to break in, speakers especially. This break in period is where the speaker gets to flex its driver and tone its sound. After about a week of playing, speakers sound better due to the burn in process. Same with the built in amplifier...

Of course you know what I think about multimedia speakers, they all suck...... you really have to hook it up to a good stereo or something... get some hifi headphones, infinitely better than speakers in the same price range (eg my 300$ sennheiser headphones cannot be matched by a speaker unless you spend a good $100,000+ or something)...
