Why does the GeForce 3 card only work with Macs produced since January? I know they say it's because a 4x AGP slot is needed, but Nvidia cards sync with 2x AGP as well. There's no reason I can see that a Geforce 3 couldn't easily be made to work with earlier AGP Macs.
What's bothering me of course is that I seem to be totally stuck with an AGP Radeon. I apparently have no way of upgrading to an equal or better Nvidia card, which obviously I would like to do given the rift between ATI and Apple. There's probably never going to be a driver update for my Radeon, and most new Mac software is going to be designed around Nvidia technology.
I have no problem with the switch from ATI to Nvidia, but it is totally outrageous that Apple would go out of their way to make sure that buyers of pre-January Macs can't switch also. My computer was only a few months old, and suddenly my display hardware was totally orphaned and non-upgradeable.
It's one thing for Apple to switch motherboards on people--that's almost standard practice in the computer industry--it's quite another for them to deliberately prevent people from upgrading their video card. A video card is put in a slot for a reason, you know.
