This is a very long shot...

I've been going nuts trying to print from my iBook to our office HP Color LaserJet 4500N and I finally figured out that it has an EIO Card which is set up to have Appletalk disabled.

I can't figure out how to enable Appletalk from the menu on the printer itself - the handbook says I need to refer to another manual I don't have and I'm reluctant to ask our computer support people to reconfigure it from the network if I can help it.

Does anyone know if there is a trick to turning AppleTalk on from the printer itself? Or should I just restore the factory settings and run for the hills when no-one can print anything any more?

hi,

we have the HP2200N in our lab. If you need to activate appletalk
in the printer network card you need the hp web jetadmin software
that came with the printer. I do not no of any other way of doing that.
It's a pretty powerful tool, you can even mess with other people's
printers if they haven't configured it properly, e.g. you can
deactivate all printing jobs from Windows machines, and leave
the printer only accessible by appletalk.

Many thanks GK - I'll have to plead with Computer Support to enable AppleTalk - I assume you can have AppleTalk enabled without disrupting the Windows machines' ability to print!

When I got in to work this evening I found an HP status printout in my post tray with the words APPLETALK STATUS: ENABLED circled.

I have no idea who did this! But I can now print from my iBook in colour

I had the exact same question. Except I'm the IT guy, I've been a very bigg fan of Apple but I'm just making my return to the platform after many years. I work for a large hosiptal which I've convenced into switching to mac's at the higher levels. I'm now the head of Macintosh support but I'm weak in the Printers on Network area.

I setup two 4050N laserjets today and everything went fine. I used Jet admin and had Apple talk enable on the printers etc. How ever what I would like to know is do you still have to use Apple Talk on the Mac's? I thought they went to straight TCP/IP. If so how is this handled on the OSX platform? I have two macs at home but untill my new dual 800 comes in for R&D at work I can't play around with it on the big network.

What I need to know is can you or can you not disable the need for Apple talk? The reason I ask is Appletalk is a chat happy protcol that broadcasts alot, even when it is not in use (From What I have seen on NETRADar).

Does anyone know of a way to just IP tunnel to the printer, like you can with PC's

Please send reply's to me at dkellogg@borgess.com as well as post. I'm in a pinch I'm gain ground with the Mac conversion though.
