I need a 1.0 - 1.2TB Hard Drive to hook to a MacPro or MacBookPro 17 via FW800. I am considering the LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme 1.2TB but am concerned about failure rates.

I have two 320GB Big Disk Extreme drives from LaCie and both make a loud knock and spin down/up when copying large files or scrubbing through video. A previous 320GB drive of the same type did this for a few months then died.

What are some good alternatives since LaCie drives seem to have a failure rate of 100% for me within 1 year? Is the 1.2TB LaCie any better?

I bought 2 750GB Seagata SATA drives for $300 from Outpost, and then bought this... Dual SATA Hard Drive Firewire 800+ 400+ USB 2.0 Combo Aluminum Drive Case

Now I have a 1.5TB SATA FW800 drive for under $700.

Anyone else use this enclosure? MovieCutter: Did you opt for the second fan?

The 2x750GB drives sound great! Any opinions on enclosures or is the above one the best all around quality?

Just as a followup - the above case with the larger power supply says it will do 3A at 12V. The Seagate drive page says it requires 2.8A... so if there are two drives in the enclosure, it seems it will not work, as it'd be trying to draw 5.6A.

No, I didn't opt for the second fan, and I'm using the stock power supply with my 2x750GB Seagates. No issues so far.

How did you get the drives for $300? I checked outpost's site and it was $400.

They periodically fluctuate their prices on those between $299, $329, $349, and $399. Check every day or so and you'll see it change.

I have two of those cases, albeit with only 2x160GB drives in each. They're very nice.

Cadaver,

You have the OWC or the CoolDrives cases?
