I use my Mac as a stereo, among other things, and I was wondering if there are CD changer drives. I know Nakamichi has a SCSI 5 disc changer, ever since long time ago (obviously, since its a SCSI) but I'm looking preferably for a firewire, if not, USB, external drive.
I have a feeling there are no such thing and there's no demand. Like I'm the only one seeking such a device.
I guess I could get several CD drives and a box, rackmount them and spend loads of money, etc, etc but I do NOT want to spend that much.
If I have no options left, does anybody know where I can get a cheap external CD drive?
Thanks
Steve

It's nutty, but the roll your own idea may not be a bad idea.
I would guess you could pick up a pile of 1x or 2x SCSI cd-rom's dirt cheap, mount them in a cheap PC server case, get a SCSI card for your mac, and daisy chain them together. Figuring out the cabling might be tricky, as would controlling the beast. But it would be a fun project and I bet you could do the whole thing for under $300 (drives from free to $10, if you can find a source, a case for max $50, & $150 for the card). Go for it!

Thanks for your reply, Paco500.
I too think "the beast" might have some stability problems. It really feels silly and stupid using "SCSI" but I should rethink that image since it'll also be stupid using up a firewire port or USB for a CDROM player.
I didn't think the whole package of building a CDROM tower would cost as little as $300. I was thinking more. Maybe this IS the only option.
Actually, another downfall about this project would be the space which the box would occupy. Currently, I really don't have space to put such a thing around my computer desk. Also this too is another silly thing - If I do a 5 disc changer, I would have to get that big 5-slot box to stash somewhere and... well, the size of the box might be around the size of my G4. Hilarious.
Anyway, I shouldn't dwell about all the negative stuff and just build it if the price is around that much. Afterall, I just want a CDROM changer.
