I am also interested in this.
I have a Windows XP PC and an iBook, both with Firewire. I'd like to be able to use the Pioneer with both.
It's mainly for data so the iDVD issue isn't a big deal. It would be good to know how to hack iDVD to work with external Firewire drives, although it's kinda moot since iDVD can't be downloaded anyway.
Also, is it possible to burn a 4.7 GB "CD" for playback in DVD players? Or how about a 4.7 GB data disc of MP3s for playback in MP3-compatible DVD players. (I've got about 30 GB of MP3 I encoded myself, at 256 kbit.)

The only difference between the 103 and the 104 is te DVD read speed. It's 4x on the 103 and 6x on the 104. Not a big deal. The write speeds didn't change.

actually, the CD-RW re-write speeds were changed from 4x to 8x.

That's incorrect. Apple originally posted that, but then changed it. I have a 104 in my new tower and can confirm that it is only 4X on the CD-RW. You can also check out the specs at Pioneer's site.
