Get a Logitech Wheel Mouse. It's the blue one with the optical sensor. That mouse is awesome for gaming, is fully compatible with USB Overdrive's generic driver, is light, well-built, and cheap! I bought mine at Best Buy for $30.
www.logitech.com
That's where you'll find some revolutionary products.
Don't buy a Microsoft mouse. As "The Dude" says, Microsoft's mice are satanic. Another vendor to look into is MacAlly.

To compliment an elite mouse, get a fUnc sUrface 1030. It's been reviewed and tested by gamers. There is no doubt that it is the best mousing surface I've used. It has topped reviews at FiringSquad, BANGG, and various other online review websites. The pad is relatively expensive, but the $15-20 you spend will make your mouse smooth and sensitive. Everglide and Ratpadz are also good. The 3M PMS (precision mousing surface) is good for balled mice.

Everglide sells the fUnc sUrface 1030 and Mouse Skatez, teflon-coated tape strips that make your mouse even more slippery.

I have the MacAlly USB iOptiJr optical 3 button and scroll wheel mouse. i got it for 30 bucks from outpost (before their shipping changes) but i have seen it for 25 to 30 at CompUSA. It comes with a great OS 9 driver, and it works great in OS X with no additional drivers at all. I would most definitely suggest this one for you, and it is also smaller, which is nice for a laptop case.

This is MacNN's review of ten optical mice. I've had the IntelliMouse Explorer, IntelliMouse Optical, Logitech Wheel Mouse (optical, the blue one which I recommended to you), and the older counterpart to the MacAlly iOptiNet, the iSweetNet. I would recommend the iSweetNet if it weren't for the weight and a rather negative review by a UK Mac magazine of its new optical brother.

Don't slam something that you haven't used.
I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical.
Pros-
- It's optical
- It's two buttons, scroll wheel+button
- It can work with lefties or righties.
- It's curved up higher in the middle. Unlike Logitech Mice (and older Microsoft Mice), where the middle is flat, there's no wrist support.
It's $30. It's worth it.

I have the MacAlly USB iOptiJr optical 3 button and scroll wheel mouse.
I have that also, very nice. Good drivers, nice shape. Very responsive. Plus, the whole thing glows in the dark

Slightly off topic (my apologies): Will Logitech be supporting us Mac users that are migrating to Mac OS X??? The reason I ask - my Logitech QuickCam, according to their web site, will NOT be supported in X (no plans anyway). Don't want to buy their mouse if they will abondon me

all basic mouse functions for every USB mouse are handled by the generic drivers. And Alessandro Montalcini is working on an OS X version of USB Overdrive, so there is no need for fear.
