This is an unusual request. May I ask why?
These days 17" LCDs don't cost more than 15 inchers, you can even get 19" wide-screen TFTs for just a few Euros more.

1. a smaller monitor won't take up as much space on my table
2. i run a program that won't allow me to re-size the window. appears larger on a smaller resolution screen. eyesight thing
3. i download low quality pictures off the internet. they look sharper on a smaller screen.
cost doesn't have anything to do with it. thanks for your reply

I don't think 17 inch lcs take up a lot more space than 15 inch ones. As for 2 and 3, I'd just set the resolution to 1024x768 and then use this special app of yours. Photos will be smoothened by the OS, so they will look ok at higher resolutions.

In either case, I think it won't make much sense if you base your decision on the financial aspect.

PS I just checked a local retailer of choice: They don't even sell 15 inch lcds anymore.

Xga is a specific resolution, 1024x768. Usually 15 inch displays have xga displays. 17 inch displays usually have a resolution of 1280x1024.

I would highly recommend the DVI 15" 1024x768 Dell displays. I'll sell you mine for the right price

Try looking for Dell model #: 1505FP
MBP 2.4/160/2/256
iMac 2.0/250/1/128
