I just got a new superdrive for my Pismo. It is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05. I'm running Tiger 10.4.8. When I insert a disk (CD or DVD) its icon does not appear on the desktop. I know the drive is working properly because I can see audio CD tracks in iTunes and don't have any trouble importing tracks into iTunes.

Just to make sure: do you have the Finder preferences set to show removable disks on the desktop?
