1, Hold down the menu, and the round middle button, and the pause button all at the same time. After about 5 seconds you will get a new iPod icon. What you just did was reset the iPod. You'll have to do this also if it ever locks down on you. (If your battery is really low the 3 finger salute will only work if you connect the iPod to the battery charger - this is per apple instructions.) Now go back in to your settings and see if the backlight now works properly.

2. If #1 above does not work I would simply do the restore option on the iPod software installer. You will wipe out the hard drive and restore it to the factory setting. Your music will have to be reinstalled to the iPod. If you are running the 1.1 update software you might want to consider going back to 1.0.4. This version works best for me but you will not have the "contacts" feature that is in the 1.1 version.

Hope that helps

Glad to hear you have the iPod fixed. Man having the backlight on all the time would seriously affect the battery life.
