Here's my gripe with resolutions on the new 17" Apple Studio Display...

•1024x768 causes everything to look too big.
•1280x1024 doesn't fill the screen, leaving gaping black areas on the sides. Looks REALLY BAD.
•1600x1200 has a crappy refresh rate and is too large for a 17" monitor anyway.

I was wondering if there was any way to access a resolution somewhere near 1280x1024 (since items on the screen are about the size I like them) that fills the screen... I know there's something like 1170x850 or so that is a normal monitor resolution...

My main interest is getting alternate resolutions in OS X. As it develops, I spend less and less time in OS 9, so I feel an OS X solution would be more benficial for me, since my OS 9 time won't be growing much... ever... I believe.

Should I have posted in the OS X forum? Maybe. I really didn't know.

Thanks to anyone that helps!

1152*870?
Doesn't it do that?
Try holding control while using the resolution control strip module...
Aren't there buttons to adjust the display to fill the screen?
There are on the older ones...
Or you can do that through the monitors control panel maybe?
The geometry button?

Yeah, I can stretch 1280x1024 to fill the screen.... but it results in everything on the screen getting all stretched out. 1280x1024 has a different width:length ratio than other resolutions...

1280:1024, simplified, is 5:4.

1600x1200, 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480 all reduce to 4:3 (the ratio the monitor appears to be built for).

1152x870 is very close to 4:3... close enough that the difference shouldn't spawn gaps.

As for holding control while using the resolution CSM, no effect.

And I'm still searching for an OS X solution... is there some way to do a Terminal command or something?

if you want an os x specific answer, then post your question in that forum. i'm sure you'll get a better response there.

On Mac OS 9.x, I am able to get 1280x870 @ 75Hz.
I have yet to try it on Mac OS X.

I recently upgraded my monitor to a 21" display. Is there a "recommended" resolution for a 21"? Should I pick the largest I can finde with the highest mhz my video card delivers?
