I just discovered the perfect iPod case; with one proviso - it won't protect the iPod if you drop it.
The case is - an Oakley Sunglass bag! Here's why it's fantastic -
1. It won't let the iPod scratch. The bag keeps sunglass lenses clean - you don't really want to scratch them, do you?
2. It doesn't make the iPod any thicker (like the heavily padded cases do). You can still slip it in a breast pocket.
3. Still can get easy access to the iPod, and if you know the menus well enough you can still use them (including the scroll wheel) while the iPod's still in the case.
4. Drawstring stops crap from pocket getting in bag while still letting the headphone out.
5. You can stuff the headphones in there if you have to.
6. Best of all - every time you put the iPod in the bag, the bag cleans all the fingerprints off it, like it does for sunglasses!
I'm extremely happy with it! If I was doing hardcore stuff with the 'Pod I might want to find a padded case, but for me keeping it same thickness is great and it stops the scratches and keeps it clean!

ps You will need to get a bigger bad (like one that comes with X-Metals as opposed to E-Wires or something) so the 'Pod can fit through the drawstring
