I've seen an ad for an external Sony firewire cd-rw, for EUR 113 (about $100?). It's an older drive (8x4x12x), but not too expensive as far as I can see. Does any of you have experiences with this drive? How does it work with OSX? Is it reliable? Any info appreciated.

hi
I bought this Sony Cd-RW about 2 years ago for about 240 pounds sterling - its a bit noisy but other than that a really excellent drive with some good software to boot. I's say go for it at that price!

I just got it, and it looked quite different from the picture in the ad. But in fact it looks better, not the standard grey, but purple metallic. And as a bonus it had a firewire card included. This is excellent!
Anyway, it's huge! I hadn't expected such a big thing. And it is noisy. So my first question is: can I just turn it on and off while osx is running? Or should I shut down before I do that. I thought that firewire is hot-swappable, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yeah, as long as you don't have a cd in there, you can just shut it off.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of unmounting before shutting the thing off
