Do companies even rent hardware like that? I have seen companies that rent full systems (i.e. for digital video stuff), but never lone pieces of hardware.

If you wanna be a ral bastard, go buy a firewire DVD recorder, do your stuff, and then return it saying that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be

Justin's right, you won't find places like that; you're better off finding a place with a good return policy.
