I want an external Firewire drive, preferably a little pocket-sized one. RELIABILITY (GOOD SOFTWARE DRIVERS/EXTENSIONS) is my number one issue. What do people recommend? Are the VST drives good? The La Cie? Among full-sized Firewire HD's, it looks like lots of people are reporting trouble with Maxtor drives, so I am inclined to avoid those....

I have 2 VST slimline FW drives and a LaCie FW/USB drive. All work great. I don't use LaCie's software at all. Having VST's software already on my drive, the LaCie mounted automatically. I can't comment on how good or bad LaCie's is, but VST's software works great.
I have been planning on buying a full-size drive for performance, but haven't been able to find one that is universally agreed upon in these forums.

If you don't need a new drive urgently I would hold off buying.
The reason is that there is a new FireWire bridge in the works and it reportedly achieves Realworld speeds of 40MB/s (a big improvement on current drives).
I know for a fact that Formac is testing this bridge and would expect to see an announcemnet soon (next few months).

Well, I want to back up my disc before I install OS X-- that is one of my motivations. That gives until 3/24 before I NEED to buy something. I agree that it is most discouraging that there are no "true" Firewire drives out there at the currnt time.(:

Love my VST drives - both small and large footprint. I don't have any ohter brands, so I can't truly compare them to others...but these have been great.

You could try building your own until the new bridges arrive.
FW Depot offers 2.5" enclosures for $130 and a 10GB IBM Travelstar HD from outpost.com is $140. VST's 10GB slim is $350.00. An added bonus is that you get IBM's 3-year warranty. VST's is one year--and I believe they use Travelstar drives.
