Just thought I would post my latest experience.

I bought one of the new seagate 7200.10 750gb ata hard drives and ordered separately one of the owc elite-al fw800 enclosures to use as my new external do everything hdd. well, before i got the fw800 enclosure delivered, i hooked up the 750gb hdd to this ata->usb adapter cable thingy and started moving data from my macbook pro, 300gb fw400 and 80gb usb2.0 drive onto it so i wouldn't have to wait for the package in the mail before transfering and organizing. well, after getting some data moved, not copied, but moved onto this 750 gb monster, i ejected it, remounted it, and was greeted by diskutil telling me it needs to be reinitialized etc. i could almost feel the tears streaming down my face. i lost photos, music, etc. i cannot tell you the sick feeling i had in my stomach. after doing some research, i find out that this usb adapter thingy only supports drive sizes up to 400gb in size, but this was not stated on the packaging, or by the guy at the computer shop that sold it to me. i dont know exactly how much this drive size limitation really has that you see advertised from time to time with these external exclosures, but now i have a feeling it is a serious matter. my advice to anyone out there looking to migrate to some of these new attractive giant size hdds is to be careful when moving your data, make sure you aren't caught by any of this fine print. if you aren't careful like moi, it may be the last time you see your data again.

400GB? That's an unusual limitation. (If a controller supports drives bigger than 137GB, then it should work with up to basically indefinitely large drives.)\

Anyhow, before you do ANYTHING else to the disk, buy and run DiskWarrior on it. (They just released a brand-new version of it yesterday.) It may be able to recover all or some of your data. If DiskWarrior cannot recover your files, then try Prosoft's Data Rescue II. There's a free demo of it you can download, which lets you see which files it'll be able to recover before you buy.

Of course, I must also point something out: this is a perfect example of why you always need a backup. It's never, ever wise to trust your files to single storage device.

I wouldn't have deleted my stuff from the other drives you listed even if I had had transferred to the 750gb unless I recieved the enclosure put it in and saw that it was still there. It's fine if you wanna transfer stuff but you should have waited until your final setup was confirmed before deleting from anywhere else.
