Are there many scanners that are compatible with OSX? And are any plug and play, as digital cameras and printers are? If not why not? Finally, what is the best scanner for under £80 ($120 ish)?
Thanks,
Will

There are a number of scanners that work with OS X, both flatbed and film. The manufacturers are just now starting to produce OS X drivers, but Vuescan, a fine shareware program, has been supporting X for nearly a year.

Just bought an Epson Perfection 1250 for $99. It came with OS 9 drivers. I downloaded the beta OS X driver from their site. Works fine but it's just a scan to file utility, not an image management program. Which is fine with me because I'd never use the rest of the junk on the CD anyway. All I want is scan to file and the beta driver has been flawless thus far.
Setup was child's play. Downloaded the driver. Installed it. Plugged the scanner in. That was it.

Where did you get the beta driver from? I have a perfection 2450 - and haven't been able to find any drivers that work natively in OSX. In fact, even my drivers that I do have don't seem to work in classic. I'm going to try vuescan, though.
please email me at vic@zaudhaus.com if you have any ideas.
Thanks,
Vic

I have a canon N1240U CanoScan Scanner.
<a href="http://consumer.usa.canon.com/scanners/csn1240u/index.html" target="_blank"> <img src="http://consumer.usa.canon.com/scanners/csn1240u/graphics/csn1240u.jpg" alt=" - " /></a>
This scanner works great with my TiBook. It's thin, lightweight and is powered through the USB port so there is only one cable to lug around. Street price is $129 but you can get it cheaper if you shop around. I just found out yesterday that the scanner is compatible with OS X when using Photoshop 7 and the latest <a href="http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php?p=csn1240u&q=download" target="_blank">ScanGear</a> plugin from Canon.
Yay! No more booting into OS 9 for me!

It was trivial to set up and works perfectly with the beta driver. The beta has been out forever. I expect the reason that Epson is not finishing it is due to Jaguar's upcoming scanner support. There probably just isn't a need to release another version since the beta works and may be superseded in Jaguar.

Canon N1240U is available from PC World at around £80. It works fine with the Beta driver, as long as you have Photoshop 7. The advantage with this scanner is that it is entirely USB powered and weighs nothing meaning that you can take it with you when you want....
Cheers,
Rohan
