Am researching mp3 players - specifically will be (mostly) used for working out - lifting and stairmaster. Of course I love the iPod, but not sure how it would be while working out (and finding a CASE that includes a waist band (not a post/clip system). I am leaning toward the Samsung Yepp YP-30SHB (128MB/179$) - it's so little and light and includes a nice workout band -- but the software stinks and is not X compatible (only up to 9.1). The Yepp YP-700 is another option, still being half the weight of the iPod and includes an FM tuner - but is 229$.

Anyone have real life experience working out with iPod or any of the Samsung, Nike PSA, or Rio products??
How about work out case recommendations??
Thanks for the help!

There is no other MP3 player worh considering. The iPod is just that good.

Start from that premise and make it work for you. You will be a happy person.

I use my iPod when I workout all the time. I don't have a case or arm band for it yet so most of the time I just set it to "hold" and slip it in my pocket. Occasionally when I'm in the StairMaster or Cross Trainer I have it sitting on the magazine rest. The iPod is pretty durable. I've dropped it 3-4 times when working out in the gym and all I have are a few minor scratches.

My brother has a Rio 600 and it comes with a nice case. The Rio is lighter than the iPod and there are no moving parts that you have to worry about. And you can use it in OS X because iTunes recognizes it. But the Rio has only 64 megs for storage and I found the screen to be too small. I guess I'm spoiled from my iPod display.

So if I was you, I'd get the iPod hands down. Paco is right, no other mp3 player comes close. Though just to be safe, I'd get it at CompUSA with a 1 or 2 year extended warranty. Apple's warranty is only 90 days and if the iPod happens to die after that, well you're pretty much screwed.

I hope this post helps.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

If I had the money, I'd definitely buy an iPod (and at least a one year warranty as well). The iPod's small, durable, and has up to 10 GB! Apparently, Shaquille O'Neal uses an iPod in the gym and at Lakers practice, so it must work well during workouts, running, etc.

I've been using a Rio 800 with 64 MB and I love it. It's light, has no moving parts, is very durable, and comes with a custom belt-clip case and wired remote. Very nice and adequate for working out with on a daily basis, but too bad I don't have access to more than a dozen or so songs at a time. It is pretty easy to use though, since iTunes recognizes it immediately in OS 9 and OS X with no added software.

So, I'd definitely get an iPod (esp. if they fall below $300), but the Rio's really nice (you can get the Rio 600 for $49.99 with rebate), and the Yepp's are really sweet too. I'd have gotten a Yepp if they were iTunes or OS X compatible. The 30SHB is almost nice enough to buy regardless of it's compatibility.

Work out w/iPod twice a week... no skipping or any other problems. Fits nicely in hand, but would like to find a way to clip it or something to hold it. Best benefit: PCers staring in awe at iPod.
