My trusty 17" Sony CRT is starting to die, and I'm looking into replacements. I'm thinking of getting the !7" ADC CRT (providing I can find one) and was looking for input from current or past owners.

I would love one of the LCDs, but it's not in the budget right now, I had the CRT at a past job and was impressed with it's picture and overall quality. I like the idea of getting rid of a few cables as well. One more thing in it's favor, I may be in a very small minority, but I think it's the most attractive piece of hardware Apple ever produced.

So, how do they hold up (the company I was working for went belly-up 2 months afer mone arrived)? Does any one know of a source of new or factory refurbished models? What would be a good price?

Thanks,

Paco

If I were you, I'd just as soon buy a brand-new Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900U (which I own and absolutely love) or 920 (doesn't have USB like the 900U, but has higher resolutions).

If you really want 17", then get a Diamond Plus 74.

You just won't get the cool case (although some of the monitors mentioned above are available in black instead of beige).

The reasons I suggest the Mitsubishis to you are the following: 1. I have bought 2 Mitsu's in a row and love them; 2. the Apple 17" CRT Studio Display, which you like, is a Mitsubishi monitor.

What's wrong with your monitor anyway? Just curious.

As for CRTs, Sony just slashed prices on theirs. I noticed Sony's FD Trinitron (model E540) 21" display in Mac Warehouse for only 579 beans. Nice deal, I say. 1920 x 1440 @ 85Hz max. resoution and .24 aperture grille pitch. This may be the monitor that replaces my 17" ADC Apple CRT.

Good luck.

Edit: Unsightly grammar error.

The picture is slowly fading away. At full brightness, it's only mostly viewable, and getting worse.

I'll look into the Sonys- thanks.

I'd have to agree with the original poster - that was one *really* good looking bit of kit, and performs really well. Picture is great too!

Perhaps you could try a few of the online auctions for one?

If you're still looking for the 17" CRT Apple Display with the ADC connector, try Small Dog Electronics. They've got them refurbished for a pretty good price...
I wanna see movies of my dreams.

As I know you all were itching to hear how this facinating saga ended, I was at CompUSA this evening to check out monitors, and they had a 17" crt studio display, new in the box that the manager sold me for $179. I was shocked and very pleased.

While I would love to have an LCD eventually, I am very happy with the purchase. The picture is just beautiful, and I love having a power button on my desk again.

Thanks for all the advice.

Nice!

I have to agree that that monitor is GREAT looking. I have one at work right now as well and would not trade it for any LCD.

I've had mine for over a year now, almost a year and a half with no problems. I seem to remember seeing one or two at Circuit City a little while ago for very cheap... $150? Also, I do believe that it is basically a Sony screen.
