I'd like to add an external Firewire hard drive to my iMac DV SE (400), but I want independent password protection for it. I have read that the Western Digital ($329) and VST ($500) drives come with password/encryption software. However, for price/performance reasons, I'd prefer to get an IBM Deskstar 45GB and mount it in an ADS Pyro Firewire box ($239 + $139). Does anyone know how I might independently password-protect the IBM drive? Or would it be better to go with the WD or VST drives and their included software?

[I recognize that the iMac can't take full advantage of the Deskstar's speed, but I expect that I'll be upgrading to a G4 eventually.]

Thanks in advance.

VST has some great drives in large-capacity for less money...you were looking at the small-profile units.
I really like the VSTs and the password protection works great.

Thanks, Scott, but the best price I see for a VST full-height 30GB drive is $549. I can buy 2 45GB IBM Deskstars for less than that. Am I missing something? Thanks again.

FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit has a decent password & encrytion scheem at the driver level. It prompts you for the passworh when the volumn mounts. I haven't tried it over firewire though.
