My Epson Perfection 1650 is giving weird results when I scan B&W photos from a book (printed on plain paper, not glossy coated). No matter what the settings, shadow lines appear when I zoom in on the resulting image. The effect is somewhat as if light is passing through a venetian blind onto the subject.

My ancient HP ScanJet IIcx produces great results on the same photos. I worry only that someday the software will no longer work.

The Epson is highly rated by some reviewers. What am I doing wrong?

You might want to try using the scanner with VueScan. This software supports Epson scanners. (Not sure about the one you have, the site is not respondong right now) If the problem persists in this software the scanner may be damaged.

Glad to hear it worked. I have been using his software for some time now. The interface may not be quite as cook looking as others, but it makes up for it everywhere else.
