Is there a good internal cd-rw for my G4 or should I stick with an external?

Depends on how much you want to pay for the CDRW and if you need the DVD player. Internal recommendation is Plextor 12/10/32 IDE ('bout US$250 or less), external is Que! 12/10/32 FW or Yamaha 8/8/32 FW ('bout US$450 or less).
I need the internal DVD, so I got an external SCSI...FW comes out to be 'bout the same price if you take into account the price of a (cheap) SCSI card (2930U). I just thought it'd be cheaper for more SCSI devices later...

What do you do about drivers for the internal drive? Are there any problems with Mac OS not recognizing the internal CD-RW drive? For instance, when you want to boot off a CD?

I have an internal SCSI HP CD-RW drive in my beige G3 and toast recognizes it and is bootable. The drive isn't even labeled as Mac compatible and it has never given me a problem. I would expect the IDE connection in the G4 would work in the same way. It's the software that matters.

Along these same lines, does anyone know if it is possible to *modify* the zip drive slot to accomodate a cd-rw? I have an external rw, but want to leave that with the iMac and install an additional rw in the G4.

It's impossible to modify the Zip slot. If you look closely as you close the case, you will see that the processor heat sink occupies the area right next to the Zip, so there is no room for a 5 1/4 device.

Onvia.com has a very good price on an internal SCSI Yamaha 8x4x24 ($232CDN). I put it in an external case ($13 in surplus store parts) and everything seems fine (hooked up to my Performa 5200 - SCSI card for G4 still en route). Total cost = $338CDN including cables ($226US), which is the same $$ as USB devices but _vastly_ superior.
If you are only going to hook up the SCSI burner (even though it supports SCSI-3), zip or scanner there is no need to go with anything other than the cheapest SCSI card you can find. The Adaptec 2906 ($70CDN) supports 10MB/s. The 8424 transmits at max 5MB/s with a "burst" of 20MB/s that I assume is not really a factor (8x is roughly 1.6MB/s, 24x is ~6.6). Macs with built-in SCSI only run at 5MB/s on the external port, and I never had trouble at my last job burning 8x via the built-in bus on a G3/266.
Having said that, do not get a cheap card if you plan to hook up a high-bandwidth device such as HD, RAID array, tape backup etc...
Hope this helps,
