Here's one for the experts:

Is it possible to remove a USB CDRW from its external enclosure, remove its USB bridge hardware and run it as an IDE device internally? Am I right in saying that, at heart, as USB CDR is really an IDE device in USB clothing(!)?

Sorry if it has already been asked...just curious

Absolutely possible. You can also put some other IDE device in the enclosure i.e. a hard drive and most of the time it will work as well...

It should be possible, but just make sure you know what you're doing. You don't want to end up getting *burned* by a screwed up CD burner. haha hehe hoho! I crack myself up

OK, great. Now, has anyone actually attempted this and are there any online resources illustrating how to do it? I think I might give it a try one of these days...

I took a USB QUE! CDRW out of it's case and popped it in may G4 no problem.

The biggest ordeal was actually getting the case of the QUE! drive apart. The plastics for the top and bottom were "tabbed" together so I had to take a small screwdriver to these tabs and pry them apart. Wasn't a big deal but I think the case won't be the same again. Once that plastics were off, just disconnect all the connectors to the drive.

Pop open the G4 and pop off the front bezel. There are two screws on the front that hold the drive sled in place. Unscrew those and bring the sled forward a little bit so you can get your hands on the IDE and power connector to the internal drive and disconnect. Once disconnected, bring the whole sled out. There were 4 screws holding my existing DVD drive on the sled. Undo those and remove the drive. There was a "cage" on the back of my DVD that looks like it may be an RF shield and probably not needed - I just removed it. Pop in the replacement drive where the old drive was, tighten it back down to the sled, put the sled back in and reconnect power and IDE cable.

I believe Apple has a QT movie on their G4 support page that details the removing of the internal drive. Be warned that in my case, my external drive plastics are not the same - I know the warranty is voided on it now. You have been warned!

Also, the front of the QUE drive doesn't allow for the front bezel of the Mac to fit so I had to leave it off - leaves me with a functional, but ugly Mac.
