I know SCSI Buses have cable length limitations, but do FireWire cables as well?

To get the full 400Mbs, 4.5 meters is the limit. Reduce the speed, increase the range...
@ 100Mbs, 20 meters is possible.

You can get FireWire repeaters to boost signal strength and get longer connections that way. Also check out Videonics (www.videonics.com). They make special longer cables that are shielded better for longer runs.
