I had my SC 740 (not i) hooked up to my Mac IIci (SCSI) and now that I have an iMac (DV SE), every time I try to print I get the following message:
The printer is not responding. Make sure the printer is online and ready to print.
So, when I go to the Chooser to select the SC 740, I get this message:
The printer/modem port you want to use for the SC740 is not available because AppleTalk is selected or another application is using the port.
BUT, AppleTalk is inactive and I have no other applications running. I have the printer hooked up with a USB cable and I installed the printer software that came with the printer. Can someone please help me?

Sorry if my earlier post sounded a bit harsh. I think I have the solution for you. You need to download the new drivers from Epson. The older drivers that came with the printer probably don't recognize the USB port. Click here to download. After you install the printer and click on the Epson driver in the Chooser, the USB port should show up in the list on the right. Good luck!

Thank you so much!!! I fixed it at 2 a.m. this morning and it works like a charm. It couldn' t have been any easier if you were here doing it for me.
I was so afraid I was gonna have to go back to my IIci to do anything important and that I had spent all this money on an iMac to be one of the women who only uses it to surf the web and play solitaire and I don't even have solitaire.
Again, thanks.

You don't have solitaire? How can you run the secret GirlOS without it?

go to: http://www.freeverse.com/bms/index2.html
and download it! It's shareware, but so unbelievably cool it's worth the $20.

welcome, kacey...

Thanks, Andi.
I'll check it out. To be honest, the only reason I don't have Solitaire is because I've been so busy playing Snood, I haven't taken the time to download many other games.

You're very welcome. And welcome to the forums. If you're looking for games try:
Download.com
VersionTracker
and
Ambrosia Software
There's a lot of great shareware games out there.

Thanks tonymac and andi*pandi!!!
This has been great. I not only got my printer working but, I now have so many games of Solitaire to play, I may never do any work that will need printing.

Thanks for everything. I wish I had more Mac Friends to tell how great this forum thing is.

If I can ever repay the favors, let me know. I'm hooked now.

Okay, now I have another problem.
My printer shows up in my chooser and is working fine. I can successfully print something from Appleworks but, when I try to print something in Word 6, it tells me that Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer and it won't tell me what the problem is.
I tried checking the manual but, all it says it make sure the printer is hooked up properly and turned on and that the right printer is chosen in the chooser. I did all that and I know it works because I can print with Appleworks but, I want to use Word.

that's odd.

what else can/can't you print from? Try printing a disk window, or a screen capture from something.

word is evil...

Well, I printed this whole thread with no problem. Whetever is it is, it must have something only to do with Word. I don't even know where to look within Word for a problem. And the error dialog doesn't tell me anything. It did give me the option to look up Help but, I guess I don't have it installed cuz, it couldn't find Word Help. Why can't anything be easy?

kacey.

You may need to upgrade to Word 98. Word 6 is pretty old (it was released in 93 or 94) and may have issues with OS 9 (I haven't actually tested this, but it makes sense). If you're just using Word (as opposed to the full Office suite) the upgrade should be fairly inexpensive. You may also want to try reinstalling Word 6 as it can become unstable if some of its support files become corrupted.
Hope this helps,
Tony

I'll try it and let you know. Please check back in a day or two to see if it works or not. I have to get the M-Office CD from my mom to reinstall it. I want to try that before I spend money on an upgrade.
Thanks,
kacey

I've had problems printing Word documents to the Epson 740 printerppWord 98, that is. I've posted those problems in the fora here and elsewhere before, and lots of people have made suggestions, but from time to time printing causes the computer to crash as soon as the document has finished spooling. When I restart the computer, the printing proceeds without further problems.

Using Eradicator, I've noticed that the problem occurs when there's a particular invisible Word file on the desktop, and when I think about it I can prevent the crash simply by using Eradicator to delete the file before I print. Mostly, however, I've been using AppleWorks for documents. No crashing with that.

Hey, tonymac thanks again. I didn't bother trying to reload Word 6, I went ahead and installed MO '98 and it seems to be working fine. I have Appleworks and it works fine but in my personal opinion, Word is better.
Because of you, I feel like I have a genie in my iMac--instead of rubbing a bottle for a wish, all I have to do is post a message for an answer to my problem. You should change your UserName to: geniemac. Thanks alot.

Thanks yoyo52. I got it working but, I don't know what Eradicator is, how to use or if I even have it. (Of course, I could just do a search.) But, I've got Word working for now and I'll keep AppleWorks as a backup in a pinch.

You're welcome. It's always difficult upgrading to a new system. I had a lot of the same problems when I bought my G4 in February. There are a lot of people in these fora who are very knowledgeable and helpful. I've learned as much as I've helped.

Ok, maybe I should have said "because of people like you (and andi*pandi, and yoyo52) I feel like I have a genie in my iMac." But, thanks again and please keep a lookout for my UserName, I'm sure I'll need help again in the future.
