This may already have been covered, but I have searched the forum and could not find an answer: anybody know if there is a way to boot off a USB Zip100 drive connected to a Rev. A iMac. I am running MacOS 8.6. There must be a way to run a startup disk through the USB connection since there are external USB hard drives available. Correct? If so can a Zip Start up disk be created? I have done this with a SCSI Zip drive on my PowerMac 7100 but can't figure it out on the iMac.

Regards

i'm not sure that you can boot off a USB drive. i'm almost positive that you can't. but not certain. I almost recall reading that USB drives were not meant to be booted from. for that matter, firewire drives initally couldn't be booted from, i think this has since been corrected.

there really is no need to boot off a zip, when you can boot off a cd.

i know that i can boot off my scsi zip, but that is another story (on a g3 350, or PM7200).
you should check the apple til library about this.
so you've triend making a boot disk using zip tools?

taken from iomega's site : http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/10079.html

How do I boot from my Zip® or Jaz® drive connected to my Macintosh® computer?

You may boot from an Iomega® Zip®drive (except the Zip® USB drive) or a Jaz® drive by installing the MacOS® onto your Iomega disk.

also reading some threads on apple.com it says non slot loading imacs (i.e. rev a-d) can't boot from usb. do a little more searching on other sites to confirm. good luck

mike one,

Thanks for the quick replies. I did some more searching and although I could not find a definitive answer all results indicate that one can not use the external USB Zip as a boot drive. I was able to do what I needed to in an alternative way. One other thing I noticed while I was playing around, the computer would not mount the Zip drive when I used the MacOS 8.5 CD as the startup disk. Even when I ran the Guest program it looked for the drive, found it, but the disk icon never showed up on the desktop. Seems kind of strange. I am using the latest version of IomegaWare (v 2.8).

Thanks again.
