i'd like to order a firewire drive primarily for backup, and maybe mp3 storage. wondering if there is any performance difference between the two considering that the ata-firewire bridge is the real bottleneck of these drives.

Yes, you are right - the bridge is the main 'bottleneck' in these external Firewire drives. If you are only using the drive for back-ups and stroage you will gain nothing useful from the faster rotational speed of the 7200 drive.

The new ADS Pyro FireWire enclosure was announced at MacWorld with an ATA100 bridge. I'm sure other drive manufacturers will start to incorporate the faster bridge into their drives soon. At that point, you may well see a difference in performance between 5400 and 7200rpm mechanisms.
