my previous machine was the gigabit dual processor G4 model and i think it uses ATA33 or 66. is getting that hard drive into my mac pro just as easy as buying a cable adaptor for it and plunking it in?

thanks.

The Mac Pro is built for SERIAL ATA drives, not ATA 33 or 66 drives. Sure you can get an adapter/converter that will let you read and write such old drives, but you can get 300GB of SATA coolness for around $100 and that's what the machine was designed for... My 2¢, but a strong 2¢.

all i want to do is get the files off it and onto the new machine. then i'll probably put the old drive back in the old machine and give it to my dad. :]

Connect the two Macs via Firewire, boot the old Mac in target disk mode, copy off the files you want, and then prep the machine for your dad.
