hello.

i'm planning on buying a Pyro firewire drive kit this week, and a maxtor 45 or 60 gig drive to put inside it...

but, this evening i've been doing my usual reading of the mac forums--macnn, appleinsider, and macfixit, and also looking up info on the pyro kit elsewhere.

several times i have come across the claim that one cannot boot off of such a setup. is this true?

just to clarify--i'm running a powerbook 400 (pismo 2000), with the built-in firewire. if i buy a pyro drive kit, and p lop a maxtor drive in there, will i be able to boot off that hard drive?

i was planning on test-driving osX beta, and possibly giving linux a shot, using this drive.

can i?

thanks,
-matt

I believe you can if you first apply the 2.4 Firmware update.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

Here is a very nice site which outlines what you wish to attempt, and should help you save yourself some bucks. See the bottom of the page. The site suggest you need to ensure that your drive is powered up first before connecting.

I believe the site suggests a 30 gig drive with the FireWire kit will run you $309.00 from outpost.com. Overnight shipping free and no taxes in most places.

Let us know how you make out…
