I'm am very interested in buying an iPod, but have to wait until i have sold my MD player which will be useless soon..
Now I wonder what it takes, anything from 32 to 256kbit and VBR on when ripping, or are only 64, 128, 160 and 256kbit possible?
Is it also possible to put files in the aiff format?

I believe the iPod is supposed to support everything which can play in iTunes.

AIFF definitely works and I have had no trouble with my VBR files (but thats due to me running the latest update 1.0.4 which fixes a VBR problem)

Cheers Edd

I own an iPod but I haven't even tried it above 192kbps.The files are big and 192 is good quality for me.Some people are posting that 256 doesn't play well.Others say it does. One thing is for sure.Big aiff's access the disk all the time.Which means you drain your battery fast and you can't even move because if you move the song will stop playing from the shocking.
This is something that will be resolved from apples part. It's a very good and useful thingy (!!) small fast easy interface and excellent interaction with your mac.
One more thing.Don't hang too long on forums that talk about the thing that you are interested in buying (in this case the iPod). You always get the impression from these forums that everything in this thing is built wrong and if you keep it in your hands to long it will explode. So read some things so that you know it's downfalls but don't read to much. The whining and the horror stories are unstoppable.
I didn't have even the slightest problem with my iPod.The updates
from apple are regular so the problems will be resolved.Enjoy your iPod !!!

I have seen these messages about the whining, and I am aware of the fact that only those people will post a message who have a problem with their ipod, all the others won't bother. But when i bought my G4 i asked and one guy warned me (it concerned the nvidia card), if he hadn't i would have ended with a graphics card useless to me...

I've never heard of netMD, what is this exactly?
EDIT: Just visited the Sony site, wow, i had never heard of that...but it's no real alternative to the ipod, or is it?
