Okay, maybe this is old news but not to me. As I was observing a friend as he did some web surfing, I noticed this story . However, the "more" part of the article is a broken link. I was wondering if anyone had any more info about this. Please post it here.

I'm wondering if this new "wireless" firewire might be worked into a new wireless networking standard. Either that of the new Mac attraction is going to be able to burn Cd in a drive that isn't physically connected to the CPU. which would be cool but kinda pointless IMHO. Please post any new info. I'm curious about this.

I read about this in DV magazine a while ago and they had working models of Sony camcorders with wireless Firewire. According to the article I was reading, it's only available in Japan. As I understand it, I think that the process involves piggy-backing the Firewire signals over pre existing wireless technologies, like Bluetooth.

Here's an article on NEC developing a Wireless 1394 connection.

Intel seems to be interested in Wireless Firewire as well (as they should, since Firewire is their competitor with the USB 2.0 standard.
Wireless IEEE 1394 over IEEE 802.11
One of the more exciting recent directions the development of 1394 technology has taken is in providing a wireless solution for the transmission of 1394 protocols over IEEE 802.11, the emerging standard for wireless data transmission in the corporate environment and increasingly in the home as well. The basic idea is to implement 1394 as a Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) on top of the 802.11 radio hardware and Ethernet protocols, bringing together a convergence of these important technologies. This protocol adaptation layer enables the PC to function as a wireless 1394 device. Intel is currently chairing the specification development efforts for this technology in the Wireless Working Group of the 1394 Trade Association.
Philips seems to have working on it as early as 1999.

Obviously wireless Firewire would have to be large in Apple's future game plan as well, though of course Apple doesn't make a habbit of broadcasting its future business moves all over the web, generally.
