Do printers or scanners ever draw power from the USB port? Or are devices that don’t have power sources (like thumbdrives) the only devices that do that?

I’m wondering, because I bought a USB-powered 4-port hub for my parents, but now I’m wondering if I should’ve bought a self-powered hub instead. If the printers and scanner won’t be drawing any power though, then it seems to me that this hub should work fine.

An ancient HP Deskjet 920c (typical inkjet printer), an HP Deskjet 9800 (wideformat inkjet printer), and an HP Scanjet 4670 (vertical scanner).

Yes, we kind of like HP peripherals.

None of these items require power from the USB port. However, they do need a typical signal that the Peripheral indicates to the system that its ready for use. In some instances the Hub can be a detriment where by the device will not work properly. But in the case of HP it usually is related to the software driver.

Is that an issue with hubs in general, or just USB-powered hubs?

Thanks for the help.

Its definitely true with USB hubs. Whether or not its true with others, I'm not certain.
